Since Great Lakes took over my loan from Direct Student loans the amount that I owe has increased by more than 100%. The monthly payment the Great Lakes expects me to make not only is unreasonable, it is impossible. I have attempted to contact them on several occasions to negotiate terms that I am able to manage. Each time, I am told that there is absolutely nothing that can be done. I looked on the Department of Education official website and found several other options that are within the realm of reality. In my opinion, Great Lakes practices are nothing short of criminal. I have read several reviews that echo situations similar to my own, I am not sure how Great lakes came to be in control of so many student loans with out notice or consent of the barrowers but I believe that this company has zero integrity or professional ethics. In their mission statement they claim that they are dedicated to making college a reality. What it should say is that they are dedicated making a life time of crushing debt a reality and making successful student loan repayment impossible.

One of my student loans was through a different loan servicer before being sold to the U.S. Department of Education and it is currently with Great Lakes. Ever since the first time I have contacted them by phone, their customer service has been excellent. I know that every time I call, I will get an agent on the phone who will walk me through all of the steps if need be and will not raise their voice at me for any reason if I am misunderstanding a process and need clarification. They even allow you to scan and e-mail or fax your documents to their offices without having to go to the post office (an option my other loan servicer does not offer). I have loans with a different servicer as well and calling them after talking to Great Lakes is a downgrade on customer service. I wish all my student loans could be with Great Lakes because I end every call feeling confident that I was taken care of by their employees. I highly recommend their services if you are looking for a quality servicer for your student loans!

Very disappointed with this company-and how debt is handled by student loan providers with the D. of Ed. in general. I am attempting to pay back debt as quickly as possible, yet there are several "rules" set up to insure in my opinion, that quickly paying off loans is not a possibility and providers can make more on interest during the course of my loan. Wish that they had my best interest in how they apply my payments, and not their own. Once I make minimum payments on my loans, I should be able to apply my payments wherever I want.

I attended ITT tech and was told that with a parent plus loan it would be under my name but my father cosigned to it. So yeah the school lied but noone from the original team is still there. I tried making my case to these people but they refuse to let me consolidate it with my other student loans, adjust the payments based on MY income or do anything to assist me. I will have payments as high as $440 a month which is more than my paycheck per week.

Great Lakes actually cared about my situation. They expressed empathy when I informed them of the various tragic incidents that took place in my life resulting in my inability to handle my loan. I will always recommend Great Lakes to anyone who needs assistance with their school loans.

Website is difficult to navigate, search terms and the same pages appear. The payment options are worded poorly, hard to understand. Customer service is limited to central time zone. Representatives are misinformed about payment dates. I wish I could move my loan to a new company.

I love Great Lakes Borrowing!! I am so happy they own all of my loans. They have a great website and the customer service rep I talked to was very nice despite me being late on my payment.
